Improve Kraft pulp brightness with Vybrant enzymatic bleaching technologies

Vybrant 700 series
The Vybrant 700 series of enzymatic pre-bleach technologies make Kraft fibers more receptive to bleach. These products are particularly helpful for mills that have trouble hitting brightness targets due to chlorine dioxide (ClO2) limitations, experience bottlenecks caused by a distressed generator chiller system, or that want to reduce the cost and environmental impact of their bleaching program.

With the Vybrant 700 series, your mill can:

  • Reduce ClO2 usage by as much as 20%.
  • Achieve a higher final brightness and reduce reversion.
  • Speed up production and add incremental tons.
  • Reduce usage of water and other brightening chemistries.
  • Reduce AOX discharge.
  • Save money.

Success Story

Challenge: A NBHK mill needed to reduce costs and identified chlorine dioxide use as the major contributor to bleaching costs.

Solution: Buckman ran a trial using Vybrant.

Results: Total ClO2 usage was reduced by 20%. The mill has since converted to full-time use of Vybrant and has found that this savings in ClO2 has been sustainable month to month when compared to the baseline.

Return on Investment: $600,000 per year

Vybrant 900 series
The Vybrant 900 series of post-bleaching technologies uses specially selected enzymes to remove brightness-limiting chromophores in bleached pulp. Using these technologies can help you:

  • Achieve a higher brightness with less bleach
  • Reduce reversion
  • Reduce production bottlenecks due to chlorine dioxide limits
  • Increase production
  • Improve effluent and reduce AOX
  • Reduce usage of optical brighteners in the paper mill

Brightness beyond bleach

Challenge: A mill producing bleached Kraft hardwood pulp wanted to increase brightness, reduce costs, and minimize microbiological fouling caused by residual peroxide in the disinfection program.

Solution: Buckman began a Vybrant program at the final bleached decker repulper, eliminated peroxide usage as an antichlor, and reduced ClO2 by 3 kg per MT.

Results: Bleaching and microbiological control costs were reduced while brightness out of high density storage was 1.64 points higher than going in.

Return on Investment: US$ 1.77 per ton

Return on Environment: BOD and COD were significantly lower. AOX in effluent was also reduced.
