PROCESS VARIABILITY IS KILLING YOUR MILL’S PRODUCTIVITY
Balancing a variety of interrelated production variables is critical to the continued success of your mill. But that becomes more challenging by the day because of several industry trends.

It’s challenging to maintain the delicate ecosystem that helps digesters work effectively
In this environment, maintaining trouble-free production is a constantly moving target. Most mills address immediate process issues one at a time as they occur. But each impacts the others, so fixing one can complicate the next.
What Are the Risks?
What are the risks?
Uncontrolled microbial growth can suppress pH, produce odors and gasses, degrade starch and fiber, and increase the amount of dissolved calcium, which can cause issues in the anaerobic digester. Improper management of the anaerobic digester could lead to unplanned shutdowns for maintenance. Higher ash content in OCC brings with it more starch, which increases the nutrient loading on the anaerobic digester.
Continuing to tackle these dynamics individually simply means spending ever-increasing amounts of time and money for smaller and smaller returns. That’s why mills need to shift the focus from treating independent variables and instead introduce end-to-end process stability.
To do that, you must overcome three main challenges: gaining better control over your process chemistries, addressing effluent treatment, and maintaining process reliability and safety.
